![]() ![]() I'm pretty sure this will be the most fun I have reading a Marvel issue until I get to Variants #2. And most important of all, *Jessica sounds exactly like I want her to sound*. And the variant plot is supported by great thematic groundwork i t's no accident that Jessica spends a lot of this issue thinking about her appearance and her past choices. Because I'm 80% sure Killgrave is a red herring. And ya know what? I'm handing this issue a perfect score *anyway*. Lots of Marvel heroes have done variant team-ups lately, and when it comes to Jessica Jones, "Killgrave's back" is the plot for like half of her solo serieses. Here goes: At first glance, the initial plot points look a little tired. Thats the question facing Jessica Jones, as what seemed like a routine investigation instead has her encountering other incarnations of herself from across the. The girls are excited about the Valentine's dance with all the Briarwood Boys. In the fourth book of this series Claire and Massie are finally becoming friends, but the better friends they are, the more the other three hate them. which is probably the most realistic part of the whole thing and contributes to my theory that this series is at the end of the day more abt youth becoming cognizant of the restraints of femininity. at the heart of each girl’s romantic conflict is the fear that she is either undesirable by men or lagging behind in development.

Frances’ plan to betroth Jane to Edward fizzles. After Katherine’s death, Jane narrowly escapes getting caught up in the doomed machinations of the Seymours, protectors of boy-king Edward VI. Frances brutally punishes her on the slightest pretext, and Jane is happy to escape to the household of Queen Katherine Parr, King Henry’s sixth wife. A Tudor Mommie Dearest, Frances hardens her heart against Jane for failing to be born male. A minor throughout, Jane is subject to the whims of corrupt and ambitious adults bent on exploiting her bloodline to advance their own agenda. In setting her first novel around Lady Jane, daughter of Henry VIII’s niece, Frances, Weir must surmount two major historical constraints first, that Jane’s fate is known, and second, that Jane, though precocious and unusually well-schooled for a girl of the time, is a necessarily passive character. ![]() Who better to rehabilitate her than Weir ( Queen Isabella, 2005, etc.), author of numerous works of popular history, five of which concern the Tudor dynasty. I watched a few episodes of a Sleepy Hollow tv show years ago, but have never delved much deeper into it, so most of what I know comes from pop culture references to the Headless Horseman. I actually don’t know the legend of Sleepy Hollow very well. Could the Horseman be real after all? Or does something even more sinister stalk the woods? What did I think? But then Ben and a friend stumble across the headless body of a child in the woods near the village, and the sinister discovery makes Ben question everything the adults in Sleepy Hollow have ever said. Fourteen-year-old Ben loves to play “Sleepy Hollow boys,” reenacting the events Brom once lived through. Twenty years after those storied events, the village is a quiet place. Brom says that’s just legend, the village gossips talking. Not even Ben Van Brunt’s grandfather, Brom Bones, who was there when it was said the Horseman chased the upstart Crane out of town. About the book:Įveryone in Sleepy Hollow knows about the Horseman, but no one really believes in him. Finally, I argue that the author employs the narrative device of “prototypical distortion” to lampoon the characters’ deviance. Therefore, I point to the maladaptive psychological traits that the characters exhibit and to how these are projected into the character’ language, forming thus idiosincratic linguistic patterns. ![]() Călinescu’s 1938 novel Enigma Otiliei (Otilia’s Riddle) and, in the wake of several literary critics’ shared view that the novel’s characters are individuals driven by much more complex internal mechanisms than simply being based on a single social schema, I suggest that this complexity can be accounted for by the tools provided by psychopathology. ![]() ![]()
